Yotsuba Q&A

Do bacteria grow in the refrigerator?
It’s not true that milk will remain safe to drink as long as it is always kept refrigerated after opening.

Among bacteria, there are types known as psychrotrophic bacteria, which are capable of multiplication even at low temperatures of 10 ℃ or below, and may cause milk to spoil even in the refrigerator. The multiplication of these low-temperature bacteria can cause a bitter taste in milk.
After opening milk, it is important to keep the spout clean, and finish drinking the milk as quickly as possible.
Also, during warm seasons, if the refrigerator door is frequently opened, temperatures inside the refrigerator may rise. Especially near the door pocket, the temperature tends to be higher than in the back of the refrigerator, so it is important to be mindful of where milk is stored.
As vegetable compartments are 10 ℃ or warmer, they are not suited to milk storage.
